“Thank Rick”
At the end of 2022, my mom invited me for dinner. Her cousin from Chicago was in town with her husband. I arrived, greeted Helen, greeted Rick, and then opened a can of soda water.
Inevitably, as family dinners go, they asked about the 26-year-old’s career.
“What are you currently doing?” Rick asked.
“Well,” I began.
Rick listened.
“And that’s why I’m considering buying a Tuk Tuk,” I concluded.
Rick looked at me with a glimmer in his eye.
“I’ll sponsor the Tuk Tuk,” he said.
In that split second, my life changed.
I knew I needed to accept the offer; opportunities like these don’t happen often. After some quick research, a Tuk Tuk was purchased in Durban, transported through Gqeberha and delivered to Cape Town. The doorbell rang, the Tuk Tuk’s engine started, and the adventure began.
Seven months later, in a moment of honesty, I acknowledged that the idea of the Tuk Tuk and the Tuk Tuk itself didn’t align. Day after day, I stared at Le Tuk Tuk, willing it to rev along its envisioned road. Eventually, I relinquished all resistance and accepted fate. We said goodbye to the three-wheeled beast and, with mixed emotions, sighed a sigh of relief. Thankfully, there was a backup plan.
In life, some people/objects/places arrive at your doorstep, teach you some lessons and then leave. For me, one of those transitory objects was an entire Tuk Tuk sponsored by PolarExplorers.
Even though the Tuk Tuk spent the majority of its existence in a stationary position, it led to some unbelievable exploration and adventures.
Le Tuk Tuk’s spiritual offspring, Le Van, picked up where Le Tuk Tuk left off. If you see Le Van zooming around Cape Town, just know that I am trying to inject energy into someplace somehow, and thank Rick for making it happen.
