Le Shoutout 🧣
To 2023 & to you.
To every person you met,
to every hand you shook,
to every challenge you received,
and every risk you took,
to every lesson you learned,
to all the personal growth,
and every bit of support
you gave to you, yourself,
and to others, both.
Danko.
Shoutout.
Le Story ✍️
Building a fire with long, hard wood is an art and a dance.
Depending where you are in the world, wood suppliers will either supply:
Long-wood (rough-looking branches cleared from the bush).
Short-wood (neatly cut pieces using a chainsaw and/or axe).
While short-wood makes for very easy fire-making, wild-caught long-wood makes things slightly trickier.
Whenever you stack a long-wood fire, the lanky pieces will almost always stick out of the fire pit in every direction other than the direction of the firelighters, resulting in a pile of wood mostly untouched by flames.
To build a cookable fire, you need to wait for the long pieces to burn down the centre and break in half so that you can re-stack the now-shorter pieces on top of themselves.
Once all the previously long pieces are neatly re-stacked and re-nestled in a neat pile, the flames can engulf them all.
Now that the entire wood pile is burning, the much-needed coals (for cooking) come quickly.
The other night, while sitting around a fire with my mom, I was waiting for the long-wood to break in half. I knew the fire needed to collapse. I needed the fire to collapse.
So, when the fire collapsed:
*whoosh clunk*
It surprised us both; however, our reactions were vastly different.
“Oh no!” said Mom.
“Yes, finally,” said me.
I stood up from my chair, picked up my tongs and walked over to the fire.
Now that the fire had collapsed, I could continue building.
Note: the terms long-wood and short-wood were specifically self-created for the story above. If you can, please refrain from walking into a random shop around South Africa and asking for long-wood.

Long-wood and short-wood are very useful additions to our language. I LOVE them and will use them with appreciation. 👏👏👏🪵🪵🪵
