Le Shoutout π§£
The other day, while at a birthday tea, I spoke with Ben Bettendorf for a bit.
Ben (affectionately known as Chef Ben from Obi Resturant) has become an unexpected friend and someone I hugely admire. Each time he tells me a story about his sushi restaurant on Long Street, I learn something new about business ownership.
After chatting about his updates while inhaling pastries, he asked me how I was doing.Β IΒ toldΒ him that things were going well. Thankfully. I also told him that I was slowly starting to realise how difficult last year hadΒ actually been for me personally.
While talking, I felt Chef Benβs eyes narrow slightly. Due to my sombre life-dump, I had the feeling he suspected I was about to tell him some bad news. I had the feeling I had to reassure him that there was nothing to worry about.
So I told him, βDonβt worry, Iβm going to continue doing it.β
βYou have to,β he said.
βWhy?β I asked.
βBecause youβre good at it,β he said.
βGood at what?β I asked.
βI donβt know, youβre just good at it.β
Even though he couldnβt quite pinpoint what I wasΒ actuallyΒ good at, his words fired me up. It was as if he had placed a small piece of firewood in my furnace.
After the tea, I drove home and continued working on my work.
It is incredible how little encouragement we need as human beings. If you ever suspect a friend needs encouragement, just give it to them; even if itβs just a thumbs up and a solemn nod, it will help.
Danko for the words,Β ChefΒ Ben.
Shoutout.
Le Story βοΈ
Last week, I was chatting with my neighbour, Clare. I was hand delivering the Le Scarf shirt that she purchased for her brother.
While chatting, another neighbour, Alan, arrived on the scene. Alan owns a gym and an apparel brand and also competes in CrossFit while doing some acting jobs on the side.
Two years ago, when his apparel brand was still growing, before he moved into a warehouse, Alan would package every order in his room, walk to the gate, and hand it to the courier guy for delivery. I would frequently witness the handover from my window.
So, while chatting, I pointed to the fresh merch in Clareβs hand.
βAh, merch!β Alan exclaimed.
And then I pointed to my car and said, βMy warehouse.β
He chuckled, reflecting on his home-warehouse days.
While chuckling, I felt compelled to share my memories of Alan with Alan. I explained how his door-to-gate delivery routine used to inspire me. It still inspires me.
In response to my inspired recollection, he shrugged his shoulders and said, βIf I can do it, anyone can. Seriously.β
And I think he is right.

Le Question π€
Which of your friends needs your encouragement this morning? If someone comes to mind, send them a small message to start their week strong.
Have a great Monday, everyone!

In exciting news, next weekβs newsletter will mark SIX MONTHS of Le Weekly.
Six months = 26 weeks.
As you may know, 26 is a number that gets celebrated at Le Scarf.
Therefore, on Saturday, 18th May 2024, a celebratory 26km lap of the Rondebosch Common will occur.
Yes, you read that correctly: LE RUN 3 is here.
Join Le Editor for ten laps of the Common starting at 07h00. If you canβt be there for the full 26km, please join for a lap or two!
Afterwards, Iβd love for anyone reading this to come down for a post-run coffee at Cafe on Common (around 09h30). The first 26 coffees will be on me.
Le Weekly receives such wholesome support, and it would be a great moment to mingle as a niche newsletter community.
Let me know if youβll be there!

Whoop whoop for Le Run 3! Will arrive with overly optimistic energy and likely manage one before walking the rest. Doing it for Philosophical Horse πββοΈ
