In 2737 BC, the Chinese emperor Shen Nung was sitting under a tree while his servant boiled water next to him. Without warning, some leaves fell from the tree above and landed in the water. Instead of restarting the boiling process, Shen Nung, a renowned herbalist, decided to try the infusion that his servant had accidentally created.
He enjoyed it. We now call this drink “tea”.
Over the last eight months, I have been living with my mother. She moved in with me at the end of last year because she needed a temporary place to stay while renovating her house, and I couldn’t afford rent, so we became unlikely roommates.
Now, thanks to the living arrangement, the highlight of my day every day is serving her tea in bed before I scuttle off to tackle the world. The simple task fills me with joy, and I recognise how fortunate I am to be able to do it.
When you think of it, it’s all thanks to Mr Shen Nung, his servant, a pot of boiling water, and a tree.
Shoutout tea.
And, more importantly, shoutout to my mom.
Le Story ✍️
It was a cold and dark morning. I was up early to do some pre-class work at Vida.
As I drove up a narrow street, searching for a parking spot, my headlights illuminated a young black-and-white cat who was sitting outside her gate.
“Morning!” I said in my most wholesome, cat-friendly tone from inside my car.
I attempted to wrap every morsel of tender, caring energy into my greeting. I love cats, and I felt bad for shining lights into her eyes so early in the morning. I wanted her to know that she was safe and that I wasn’t going to run her over! I was simply looking for a parking spot.
But obviously, because my windows were closed, she couldn’t hear my love-filled morning greeting. All she could see was a massive van trundling towards her with its headlights on full blast. Her eyes opened wide in terror. Without hesitation, she spun around, dashed back through her gate, and evaporated from sight.
I apologised (from inside the van) and continued trundling up the road, wishing I could turn off the engine, open the door, gently bend down to stroke the cat, and let her know I didn’t mean to frighten her.

Thank you for drawing attention to the special “little” things in life. It reminded me of the Milo I make for my grandson when he sleeps over these days. (We’re big buddies).
Such a simple task I acknowledge (like your mom’s tea in the morning) but it does fill me with much joy as I remember the morning routines of warm drinks that were prepared for my 3 Littlies, his mom included, many years ago. And how special those memories are…🥰🥰
