Le Shoutout π§£
The Claremont Virgin Active team makes my day every time I train.
Last week, as I walked in, Alex looked up and smiled.
βMichael,β she said.
βAlex,β I said.
*beep*
I walked through the turnstile and gave Alex a fist bump.
She looked at me with eyes (both happy and sad).
βIβm leaving,β she said.
Immediately, I started crying inside. Alex is one of my favourite front desk members. Along with the rest of the team, she played a big part in keeping my spirits up over the last two years.
Itβs always sad watching a good person go. If anyone gyms at the Durbanville Virgin Active, please welcome her with open arms!
Shoutout Alex. Enjoy the next chapter!
Le Story βοΈ
On Saturday, I joined a group of friends at the Waterfront Bauhaus (a big beer hall) to say farewell to Michael Henning.
Cherished for his humour and warmth, Michael will leave a void in our hearts as he embarks on his new journey.
The evening was wholesome. We chatted lightly, watched the Cricket World Cup, and laughed at/with Michael. Slowly but surely, the evening started coming to an end. All of a sudden, in the far corner of the beer hall, a DJ stepped onto a stage. Without warning, he started playing music at full blast.
Despite the increase in volume, no one seemed to show interest, continuing their conversations instead.
Surely the DJ could see no one was dancing? Why was he playing music so loudly?
As the first song ended, the second song started. Still, no one budged. Instead, people hunkered down even lower at their tables, conversing with their neighbours.
As the second song ended, the third song started. Still, no one moved a muscle.
As the third song ended, the fourth song started. The tension started building. And building. And building. And then it happenedβthe tipping point:
Three tables behind us, people started getting up.
But wait, they werenβt heading for the door. No, the exact opposite. A person at their table had decided to get onto the table to dance. Within seconds, everyone in the hall stopped ignoring the DJ in the corner of the room.
At our table, Michaelβs farewell had come to an end. Everyone was tired, and Michael needed to finish packing for his flight. Before we left, we took note of the life lesson that just unfolded in front of us:
Apparently, all you need to get a whole room dancing is a speaker system, four songs, and a person willing to stand on a table.
