Last week, I went on a run.
Around 6km in, I saw an elderly gentleman walking gently up ahead.
I knew who it was because I often see him walking where he was walking that day: John Rodgers, the retired geology professor who once wrote a piece about geology for Le Scarf.
As I approached, I slowed to a walk, docked alongside him, and waited for him to turn.
Eventually, he looked at me.
“It’s been a while,” he said.
For about ten minutes, we chatted about life, running, walking, and moving into new areas (we had both recently moved into new areas).
John is full of wisdom and loves sharing it, so when it came time to say goodbye, I asked if he had any advice for a young person like me.
“Yes,” he said.
He thought for a moment.
Then he pondered.
Eventually, he looked at me.
“Apply to a retirement village before you’re 70,” he said.
I thanked him for the advice, bid him farewell and ran on.

A few days later, I went for coffee with my French friend, Jean.
Jean has chosen an interesting journey through life, so I thought I’d ask Jean what I asked John.
“What is your advice?”
He started with a disclaimer that he “has no right to give advice”, but then he got started:
Do it. It’s very cliche, but do it. Do whatever it is.
Use fear as an engine.
Don’t sleep on your emotions; learn them.
Be grateful for the small things.
Live life. Don’t wait on life for you to live it.
